Our Labrador Retrievers are a combination of English and American. This means that they are more moderately balanced in terms of their size and statue. They are neither short and stocky, nor long and leggy, but well-balanced.

This is entirely up to you, but we suggest a crate that the dog can grow into, and is the appropriate size.  We use the Midwest epoxy coated crates that are 27″H, 24″W, and 36″L.  This size is great for most labs but a large male might need the next size up. Buy a narrow, lightweight 12-inch adjustable cotton collar to start with, a 6-foot lightweight cotton leash, appropriate toys for chewing and teething.   We love hard rubber toys and durable stuffed animals that most adults can’t destroy and the Kong  has products that work well for the heavy chewers, two 1-quart stainless steel bowls for food and water, a brush for fur (we use the Furminator), nail clippers, and washable soft bedding is encouraged.

This is up to your discretion as the owner depending on your budget and preferences. We recommend TLC Whole Life Dog Food and suggest looking at the premium ingredients list for the Whole Life food. We personally prefer natural foods made with real meat, micro-nutrients, and without by-products such as grain, wheat, and fillers. We like to feed our dogs food that mimics what canines in the wild have been eating for centuries, foods that promote health and longevity. You can also add blueberries, carrots, broccoli, venison and other “people” foods to augment a healthy, wholefoods diet.

Whole Life Puppy Food

TLC Whole Life Puppy Food is a complete and balanced diet formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for growth and reproduction, including the growth of large-size dogs (70 lbs or more as an adult). TLC does recommend this formula for small to mid-sized breeds puppies (under 70 lb when fully grown).

We recommend you feed your puppies our puppy food if they are small to mid-sized breed and recommend your new puppy parents do the same. Your puppy parents will switch to our Whole Life Dog Food at 10-12 months of age.

Whole Life Dog Food

Feed your dogs and puppies TLC Whole Life Dog Food for lifelong, complete, and balanced nutrition. TLC Whole Life Dog Food is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for All Life Stages, including the growth of large-size dogs (70 lbs or more as an adult).

TLC recommends this formula for all dogs above the age of 10-12months old and for large breed puppies (70+ lb when fully grown).

Puppies who begin on Whole Life Dog Food will stay on this formula throughout all life stages and will not need to transition to a different formula.

What is the difference?

TLC Whole Life Puppy Food includes slightly more protein and fat to support growing puppies. It uses fewer ingredients for optimal digestion.

Some large breed puppies do not need as high fat and protein content as small breeds and will be better supported by our Whole Life Dog Food.

According to the AKC, do NOT feed your dog chocolate, grapes, avocados, raisins, macadamia nuts, garlic, onions, or xylitol.  We also feel that replacing raw hide with a product like Bully Sticks is a safer and more natural chew treat for your dog.  Raw hide is manufactured with toxic adhesives, dyes and bleach. Yikes!!

Yes, we microchip every puppy that leaves our house. This permanent identification helps in recovering a lost pet and serves as solid proof of ownership.

We hope that each pup we bring into the world, becomes a valued member of your pack.  We use the Puppy Culture Training Program with hopes that our pups develop into socially and physically healthy family members.  Check it out here: https://shoppuppyculture.com/pages/what-is-puppy-culture

We suggest just core vaccines for a puppy which include: Parvovirus, Parainfluenza, Hepatitus, Coronavirus, Adnovirus.

Many of us are seeking alternative solutions to the toxic spot-on, flea collars and chewable flea and tick products that are on the market these days. To naturally repel fleas and ticks on dogs and puppies, we use high quality essential oils of Cedarwood, Lavender, Lemongrass or Citronella and Rosemary.  Be sure to do your research first if making a DYI spray for your dog. These oils need to be diluted in a carrier oil for skin safety and carefully applied. You can use food grade diatomaceous earth (DE) or Fossil Shell Powder together with Neem powder and essential oils of geranium and eucalyptus together to make a dust as a premise or pet treatment.  We love to use bandanas soaked in essential oils to repel fleas and ticks.  Recipe: 1 gallon distilled water, 5 drops each of essential oils of Lavender, Cedar Wood and Lemongrass and 1 drop of organic dish soap (works to emulsify the oils and water).  Soak a bandana in the mixture and wring out. Then tie the fabric around the dogs neck. As the bandana drys, you can repeat the process.  This is especially great for puppies whose little bodies are vulnerable to strong chemicals in commercial flea and tick products.

We recommend waiting until your dog is finished fully growing before making a decision to spay or neuter. Here are a few resources to help you with the consideration to delay the surgery: https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fvets.2020.00388/full

Consistency and patience are key! Here’s a great link from the AKC https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/training/how-to-potty-train-a-puppy/We recommend not using piddle pads or newspaper in the house or their crate as this is what we use to get them ready to be “litter” box trained while with their littermates.

There are many benefits to crate training. For example, while in a crate, your dog is in a safe and controlled environment when you are unable to watch over him/her. You may find that as time goes by, your dog enjoys the safe comfort of his/her crate.

We suggest using Simple Solution to help neutralize odors and stains.

We recommend that our Labrador puppies have the opportunity to complete their growth as intact dogs and

to visit the subject of spay/neuter with your veterinarian after the age of 18-24 months.  We feel that this gives

them the best chance of developing into healthy adults both physically and mentally.  Please see the links below:
